Dr. Mike McFarlane: "As the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Great Basin College, I strongly support the efforts of the GBC faculty to revise the faculty annual evaluation system. We must work together to assure that we are maintaining effective practices for the institution in every function. As Great Basin College grows, it is becoming more complex, 1- in its mission, 2- how its programs are delivered, and 3- in the nature of its service area. The College must evolve to cope and thrive with its new complexities. We as a College must together adopt those new practices that are required to keep pace with changing times and the greater demands on higher education and its professionals. Because of the increase of complexity in teaching through distance delivery options, assessment requirements, and programmatic factors, more than 50% of the GBC faculty has reassigned duties outside of the traditional classroom. It is now the time to create a new comprehensive evaluation system for faculty that not only better measures the functions associated with traditional teaching roles, but also incorporates the broad array of functions that faculty must undertake outside of traditional teaching roles."
