GBC is a comprehensive community college that provides educational opportunities to over 3,800 students across 86,500 square miles, in ten of Nevada's largest counties bordering five states. The main campus in Elko is home to an educational community that attracts students interested in a residential college experience. Barrick Gold Corporation, Great Basin College, and the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development have teamed together to establish Operation Bravo, a veteran internship program for GBC veteran students.
According to GBC Veteran Resource Coordinator Jacob Park, Operation Bravo was established to assist transitioning veterans by setting them up for success through education and employment.
Last month, Barrick Gold Corp. donated $74,528 to help launch the internship program. With Barrick’s assistance, a student veteran will receive valuable work experience within their major field of study at GBC. The money Barrick donated will sponsor five student veterans who will receive job training and mentorship from various employers within the community.
“Operation Bravo believes that by investing in our veterans, we are investing in our communities,” said Park.
The program is dedicated in honor of Elko native, Marine Lance Cpl. Raul Bravo who was killed in action in 2007 in Iraq.
Another announcement will be made once applications are available.
If a company is interested in supporting the new program, they should contact Sheldon Mudd at 738-6075 or e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
