Great Basin College's Collegiate Farm Bureau "Aggies" were recently awarded with the Outstanding Service Award at the Nevada Farm Bureau Federation's Annual Meeting Dec. 8 in Reno.
In addition, three of the four finalists for the 2015 Nevada Farm Bureau Discussion Meet were GBC students: Kaley Sproul (1st), Jackson Gibson (2nd) and Lachlan McQueary (3rd). Sproul will have to opportunity to represent Nevada in the Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Discussion Meet at the American Farm Bureau Conference in February.
The YF&R Discussion Meet is hosted each year at the Bureau’s annual meeting.
According to the Nevada Farm Bureau’s website, the meet “simulates a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. Participants are judged based on their knowledge and suggestions about a wide variety on agricultural topics and issues.”
Topics discussed at this year’s meeting included how to encourage technology innovations among farmers, as well as agriculture’s current water needs and the influence of historical water rights.
The Collegiate Farm Bureau brings together agriculture students at Great Basin College to engage them in educational activities within the Farm Bureau organization that will enhance their leadership skills and encourage them to become agriculture leaders in their communities. The student finalists are all pursuing degrees in agriculture.
