Strategic Plan Outline
Plan: Webmaster

Originated by:
I am: Public Viewer

Mission Statement: The mission of the Webmaster is to offer an online Great Basin College presence that respects the time, energy, and interests of diverse viewing populations by maintaining intuitive, confidence-building access to college services as well as to complete, reliable information about the college in the most cost-effective manner possible. Create web-based software to improve the efficiency of college employees, and, where applicable, to more readily publish institutional information on the college web site.
GOALS
1.  Goal: The information published on the GBC website is complete and as many services as possible are available online. (Theme 3)

  OBJECTIVES
1.1  Objective: All information contained in the GBC Catalog is available online. (The actual Catalog is published in PDF format. However, all information items contained in the catalog should also be readily and incrementally available as needed via an intuitive HTML navigation scheme.)

Status: Completed

1.1.2  Task: To compensate for the lack of richness in the online presentation of Degree/Certificate Programs (i.e. replacing HTML with PDF), empower the departments and Media Services to enrich online information about D/C Programs easily and in a variety of ways by creating an easy-to-use web tool.

Status: Completed

1.1.3  Task: Engage Media Services in enriching the presentation of Degree/Certificate Programs on website by using the tool created for that purpose.

Status: Completed

1.1.4  Task: Engage Department Chairs and/or Support Staff in doing the same by at first exposing them to possibilities and showing them how to use the tool created for that purpose.

Status: Completed

1.2  Objective: All information contained in the GBC Schedule of Courses is available online.

  OBJECTIVES
4.1  Objective: A duplicate, back-up web server stands ready to replace the on-campus www2 server, all functionality preserved, with a simple change to DNS.

Status: Completed

    ACTION PLAN (None on file)
4.2  Objective: Apply a “captcha” protocol to protect all online input forms from spambots, or, as appropriate, firewall forms so that they’re accessible only from on-campus computers.

Last changed on 05/04/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

    ACTION PLAN
4.2.1  Task: Initially, investigate the most effective, least instrusive-to-the-user captcha protocols now available.

Status: Completed

4.2.2  Task: Include captcha technology in login pages for: Faculty Evaluation, Strategic Planning, and Administrative/Emergency Announcements pages.

Status: Completed

4.3  Objective: Purchase and configure a new, more capacious www2 server to replace donated old server as the www2 server's functions become more critical to the institution.

Last changed on 12/23/2009 by Susanna Dorr

Last changed on 05/04/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

4.4.4  Task: Eliminate the tilde websites from the main GBC web server in concert with the migration of student email accounts from SCS to Gmail (see 1.7.6). This will enable the eventual repointing of the www.gbcnv.edu web name to our local server. It will also secure the continued existence of websites created by faculty (before the existence of my faculty web page creation tool) and still maintained by them.

Last changed on 08/18/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

4.5  Objective: GBC's IT department, under a change of leadership, is not able to support the local web server, it was announced in Fall of 2010. Negotiations with SCS ensued. A plan was set forth for SCS to create a new web server in Reno. All web files on both the current Reno-based www.gbcnv.edu web server and the local www2.gbcnv.edu web server will need to be combined and migrated to the new server.

    ACTION PLAN
6.11.1  Task: Learn Follett's mechanism for displaying the textbooks for a specific class and test that mechanism to be sure it's something I can accomplished automatically on our schedule website.

Last changed on 05/04/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

6.11.2  Task: Activate textbook linking as a test for fall '09 and spring '10. (These tests occur well after the initial publication of the schedule, after faculty has submitted textbook orders, and after the bookstore has processed them.)

Last changed on 05/04/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

6.11.3  Task: Solve this problem: Our GBC schedule has potentially many "sections" for a specific class -- IAV locations, high school sections at reduced charges, etc. The bookstore historically lumps them all together in the Follett database. This presents a huge complication in the texbook publication scheme, since our online schedule has to list each "section" independently, and the web server cannot guess where and under what catch-all the bookstore has aggregated multiple sections.

Last changed on 05/04/2010 by Susanna Dorr

Status: Completed

6.11.4  Task: Because the books must be published with other class information when the schedule is first put online, textbook orders have to happen at least a month earlier than in the past. Administration has agreed with support staff that faculty should do this ordering directly. Further, faculty should take on the burden of pre-researching availability of textbook editions. Address and solve all these problems programmatically.

7.1.3  Task: Include a script, called from the GBC home page, to check the up-status of webcampus and of the www2 server each time the home page is brought up. In the event of an outage, automatically include an alert at the top of the home page.

Last changed on 11/01/2009 by Susanna Dorr
