Microsoft Word 2003, by Rutkosky, 2003 edition.

The textbook can be purchased with a credit card at the online bookstore, by calling the Elko campus bookstore at 775/753-2270, or by ordering online directly or, from the publisher, EMCParadigm. 



For this class you need to have access to Word 2003.This software is available for students to use in GBC campus computer labs; you can also purchase the software at an academic discount through the Follett bookstore on the Elko campus (775/753-2270), or you can purchase through other means such as a retail store or another online store.

A hands-on course building on the foundation laid in COT 151 and continuing on to sophisticated manipulation of word processing software.  Topics include tables, graphic boxes, clip art, desktop publishing, fonts, macros, styles, and spreadsheets.  Prerequisite COT 151 or instructors approval

Student Responsibilities:

Be able to access the class website through WebCT. Contact the Technology Help Desk 753-3511 if you do not yet have your user name and password. 

     Have and maintain Internet access throughout the semester.

     Have and maintain all software used in the class throughout the semester.

     Have and maintain a virus-free computer throughout the semester.

     Have knowledge of Windows and file handling.

An important note about online classes:

     Do not assume that online classes are easier than traditional "face-to-face" classes. 

     Online classes can actually be more difficult than traditional classes. They require constant motivation and self-direction on the part of the student. 

     You are responsible for reading, studying, asking questions, completing assignments, being organized, and staying on schedule. 


Course Performance Objectives

         Apply word processing technology to complete school, work, or personal tasks.

         Prepare, edit, and print documents using the features of the software.

         Utilize the online help system to research features and functions in order to increase proficiency in using the application.

         Enhance documents with graphic elements such as clip art, drawing tools, WordArt, and charts.

         Automate document formatting with styles and macros.

         Apply word processing features to documents, including macros, styles, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes.

         Create tables to organize, sort, and select information.

         Paste, link, and embed information from Excel to Word.

         Access the Internet and learn to use the features of Web browsers, including browsing, searching, and utilizing hyperlinks.

         Utilize special features such as merging, master documents, tracking changes, reference pages, fill-in forms, and outlines.

         Create and modify tables and perform calculations within tables.

         Complete merges from various data sources with letters, labels, and envelopes.

         Create and modify indexes, tables of content, master and subdocuments.

         Protect, compare changes, and merge documents in workgroups

         Access Excel date easily within documents and charts.

         Customize menus and toolbars.

         Use hyperlinks with documents and web pages

         Create and apply character and paragraph styles.

Chapter Structure

         Watching online chapter overview presentations

         Reading the text

         Doing the in-chapter, step-by-step exercises in boxes with light green backgrounds ("Green Exercises" or GEs) as you go through the chapters

         Doing specified assignments at the end of each chapter that you will send in each week.

         Online bulletin board discussions

         Asking questions when things don't make sense.




Every week students are responsible for...

     Reading/printing and completing each week's assignment: the Weekly Assignments link is accessed through the class homepage

     Reading the assigned text

     Doing the in-chapter, step-by-step exercises in boxes with shaded green backgrounds

      Doing specified assignments at the end of each chapter that you will send in each week through the Assignment Dropbox (there's detailed information about the Assignment Dropbox a few paragraphs below)

     Students are responsible for keeping track of assignments turned in and grades earned.


o    All Weekly Assignment course work must be completed and sent in to me through the Assignment Dropbox by the due date and time specified (Wednesday at midnight). Once a Weekly Assignment's due date and time has passed, the link will no longer be available.

o    It's my intention to have your assignments graded and back to you in the Assignment Dropbox by the Friday after the Wednesday they're due. Sometimes you'll get them back earlier than that, sometimes later, but always after the due date. If it's going to be later than Friday I'll let you know by WebCT email.

o        No late work is accepted without instructors approval prior to the due date.  Then late assignments will be graded, and reduced 10 points per day they are late.

o        Please let me know at least two weeks in advance (if at all possible) of any times you will not be participating in the class.  Anyone not in communication with me for any two-week period (without prior approval) will have an F grade recorded for the class.  I hope we can keep these occurrences to a minimum since your input is vital to the dynamic of this class and to your grade.  You may be able to continue participating in class while on vacation.  


How do you know which work is mine?

When doing assignments,  type your initials before the assignment name when saving the document.  This is very important, and failure to put your initials and naming your assignment correctly will cost 15 points from your assignment grade.   Example: clhC14SA01.doc




           About The Assignment Dropbox

TheAssignment Dropbox link is available on the left-hand side of the WebCT window. 

Assignment links in the Assignment Dropbox are available until their due dates and times. Once an assignment's due date and time has passed, the link will no longer be available. If you've arranged to send in an assignment late (being sure to arrange this with the instructor before the assignment due date) you will send it in as an attachment to a WebCT email message.

Your graded assignments in the Assignment Dropbox will have brief comments from me in the Comments area with each attached graded assignment. You should open each graded assignment to see more detailed comments typed in it.

When instructions in the book direct you to print your work, that is optional, and only for your benefit, because the textbook-based work I get from you will be the computer files you create and send through the Assignment Dropbox.


             Discussion Topics:

Reading and posting a reply to the Discussions Board Topics. You get to the Discussions Board Topics on the left-hand-side Navigation menu. When posting a reply to a Discussions Board Topic, be sure to use the Reply button, not the Reply Privately button, so everyone in the class can read all postings.

How Discussion Topics Work

The procedure that you need to follow is:

P     Each discussion topic that is completed correctly is worth 100 points

P     Discussion are due by Midnight on due date (always Wednesday)

P     You need to respond to topic the instructor has posted on one day

        (Please post early so other students have time to read postings and respond)

P     Then respond to one other students during the allotted time on different day

P     Just saying I agree or disagree is not enough.

            Working Ahead

You have the option to "work ahead." You can complete the Weekly Assignments. upload them to the corresponding area in the Assignment Dropbox.  However, the assignments will not be graded until after their actual due dates and times.


    Computer Time

Approximately six hours per week of computer time outside of class is recommended for successful completion of course requirements.

             Useful Textbook Information 

     Make sure you have a Student CD in the back of your textbook--you will use files on this CD for your assignments throughout the book (or, you can download the Student Data Files from the textbook website).

     Before beginning, be sure to read the "Introduction" at the front of the book on pages vii,viii, andix. This introduction gives you an overview of the book's layout and logic, which helps in working through all the information presented.

     Information about becoming certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS certification) is provided on page x. GBC is an authorized MOS testing center if this is something you'd like to do upon completion of this class.

     If you'd like a refresher about computer hardware and working in the Windows format with Word, the "Getting Started" section on pages xi-xxiii is informative.


Academic Integrity 

All assignments are to be completed on an individual basis. That means you each do your own work. If two (or more) students turn in work that has been done by only one person, each student involved earns a zero (0) for the assignment(s). If it happens a second time, each student involved will be given a "F" for the class. 


If, for some reason, you feel that you cannot complete the course, you must officially withdraw from the class by the course drop deadline by contacting Admissions & Records at 753-2102, and completing the Course Withdraw Form. 

Officially withdrawing results in a "W" on your grade report. The "W" is not used in computing your cumulative GPA; it will appear on your transcript and be permanent. If you do not officially withdraw, your grade will be based on the work you have completed averaged with zeros for work you have not completed.
