The following defines the privileges and responsibilities of full time and part time faculty who borrow material from the GBC Library.

Library cards

  • GBC Library cards are required for all transactions.  The Circulation department is notified of all new appointments for staff and faculty and will prepare a library card for you when you come to the Circulation Desk.

Borrowing Privileges

  • GBC faculty may borrow books and materials from the general collections until the end of the semester, subject to recall by another borrower.
  • Emeritus faculty have the same privileges and responsibilities as other faculty, but must renew their library cards yearly.
  • The Faculty member is responsible for all materials checked out on his or her library card until the materials are returned to the Library.
  • Extended borrowing privileges apply only to the faculty member and not to family members. GBC faculty spouses and family members are encouraged to apply for a free Community Borrowers card.
  • Loan Periods

    • Books for Faculty are checked out for a semester - August 15 to December 31 and January 2 to May 20; and the summer period May 21 to August 14.
    • Books are subject to recall if requested by another patron.
    • Videos are checked out for 4 weeks.
    • Periodicals are checked out for 2 weeks.
    • RESERVE books may be checked out for 2 hours, 12 hours, 3 days or 7 days, as determined for the specific material.

    Book Renewals

    • Any book checked out may be renewed prior to the expiration date.
    • No telephone renewals are accepted for books checked out to the end of the semester. The books must be brought to a library circulation desk to be renewed.
    • GBC faculty are expected to cooperate in preserving the completeness and accessibility of the library's collections by returning books that are not being used.

    Recall of Books

    • All books are subject to recall if another borrower or the Reserve Desk supervisor requests the book.
    • If a book has been recalled it must be returned no later than the date printed on the recall notice. The date on the recall notice supersedes the original due date.
    • A borrower with extended borrowing privileges who may be absent from the area for more than one week must insure that material due the library or recalled by the library during such absences is returned in accordance with library policies.

    Holds and Searches

    • Placing a HOLD on a book reserves that book for the requester. When the online catalog indicates the book is checked out, a hold may be placed on it to prevent the book from being renewed. If the book you want is missing, you may place a SEARCH on it. You will be notified by mail or email when the book is returned or located. In accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes, information regarding the current borrower of a book will not be disclosed.

    Overdue and lost items

    • All books are due as marked. For each overdue book, two overdue notices will be mailed. The third mailed notice will be a bill for the replacement cost of the book plus a $10.00 processing fee and a $5.00 billing fee. Your borrowing privileges are suspended when you have accrued charges of $5.00 or more.

Interlibrary Video Loans from the UNR Film Library

    • Part and full time GBC faculty at all campuses may borrow videos from the UNR film collection.
    • Please notify ILL Video a week and a half to two weeks in advance of the date you require the video.
    • Print out the page from the online catalog showing the video information. Please make sure it is not checked out...we cannot request a video that is checked out.
    • Please Include the following information on the catalog page print out:  Your name, phone number, and date required.
