About the Program
In the Bachelor of Arts in Social Science program, you will study the core social science disciplines of anthropology, history, political science, and psychology. Courses in research methods, writing, ethics, and special topic integrative seminars will broaden your knowledge base and hone your communication and critical thinking skills. Optional internships and the required capstone course also provide opportunities to develop skills, make connections, and apply your knowledge to professional projects.
Program faculty provide a wide array courses encompassing broad interests. You can take classes covering Indians of North America, the Roman Empire, political behavior, the American West, the environment, and abnormal psychology among others.
Upon graduating, the successful learner will have a skill set that can be applied to a professional career or graduate school. Graduates of social science programs at GBC have gone on to careers in archaeology, social work, education, counseling, human resources, higher education, and environmental consultation. Others have moved forward in their existing careers with federal agencies, non-profits groups, and industry. Social Science graduates have also successfully entered graduate programs in education, social work, library science, sociology, and law.
Our Students
Many of our students seek the increased accessibility and affordability offered by the online BA in Social Science program. They come from diverse backgrounds, often working full time or part time while parenting. The online BA in Social Science provides the increased accessibility that these students and others need. We believe the resultant student diversity strengthens the BA in Social Science’s interdisciplinary and multicultural perspective as it brings many voices to the classroom. Also, Great Basin College has recently been recognized as one of the most affordable colleges nationwide in terms of offering online degrees.
