These are the changes to the Native American Fee Waiver as outlines in AB 150 and effective as of July 1st:

  • Any student who has registered for any classes prior to July 1st will not qualify for the waiver.
    • The waiver is only applicable for for 23/SP courses starting on July 1st, or after once the law is enacted.
  • Students must apply for FAFSA (regardless if they qualify for aid or not)
    • If they are DE students, they do not need to fill out the FAFSA
  • Students who are in a tribe or nation in Nevada, they do not have to demonstrate proof of residency in Nevada (wholly or partially).
  • Students who are in a tribe or nation anywhere in the nation, must provide proof or residency in Nevada.
    • Ex 1) Student resides in Nevada for more than a year, but belongs to a federally recognized tribe or nation in New Mexico would need to provided proof of residency in Nevada.
    • Ex 2) Student who resides in Nevada on tribal land, regardless of how long they've been in NV, does not have to provide proof of residency in Nevada. As long as they can provide proof of "tribal residency."
  • AB 150 extends to the a "member" or a "descendent" of a federally recognized tribe or nation.
    • Students would need a letter from the tribal office to demonstrate they are descendants of a tribe or nation.
  • This waiver is considered "first dollars." The waiver will be applied prior to all other aid or scholarships.
  • The waiver applies to credit and non-credit programs, classes, etc.
