Program Overview

Courses in the Certificate of Achievement Program in Substance Abuse Counselor Training are designed to help prepare students for employment in social service agencies, mental health centers, correctional institutions, rehabilitation facilities, community health education organizations, private practice, or other settings which provide substance abuse/addiction education, prevention, and/or intervention and treatment.

Courses may be used as electives or for continuing education by students or professionals in education, corrections, law enforcement, and the justice system, addictions counseling and treatment, social work, nursing, radiology, or emergency medical care.

Program Mission

The mission of the Human Services Program parallels that of GBC in terms of providing a student-centered curriculum which can be utilized to pursue opportunities for increasing knowledge, personal development, and professional service to the community.

Program Goals

The essential goals of the Human Services Program are to not only develop student appreciation for the bio-psychosocial and cultural needs of clients, but also to provide support for students as they process personal, professional, and career development challenges.

Human Services Program Summary

The Human Services Program at Great Basin College was established through a three year Rural Health Outreach Grant (#D04RH06803) in 2008. Now in its fifth year of existence, the program has exhibited significant growth as shown in the data below. In 2010 the Certificate in Substance Abuse Counselor Training was added to the existing Associate of Applied Science in Human Services and the Human Services Certificate programs.

Please check with the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug, and Gambling Counselors or the counselor licensing/certification board of other states, if applicable, PRIOR to beginning any course, as licensing, continuing education, and/or certification board requirements vary. Supervised internships for substance abuse counselor licensing are not available through Great Basin College.

Admissions & Requiremts

The AAS degree and Certificate of Achievement in Human Services programs share common courses, so that students may easily complete requirements for the AAS degree while completing a certificate program. Entry level courses have no prerequisites or program entry requirements. Students choose to begin at any time by registering for courses. However, academic advising prior to beginning any course of study is highly encouraged. Most coursework may be completed online, through interactive video, and/or by independent study on a case-by-case basis.

At least 15 hours of coursework must be successfully completed at Great Basin College. Substitutions/credits for prior, equivalent coursework may be permitted, at the discretion of the School of Health Sciences & Behavioral Health and/or the GBC Registrar. An overall 2.0 average is required for completion of the Certificate of Achievement.

  • English/Communications - 3 credits
    • ENG 100 or 101
  • Mathematics - 3 credits
    • MATH 116, 116E, 120, 120E, 126, 126E or higher* includes STAT 152 (MATH 126, 126E recommended)
  • Human Relations - 3 credits
    • HMS 200 (required)
  • Technology - 3 credits
    • IS 101 (required)

*MATH 120 is recommended, as it is required for the social work, radiology, and other degreee programs.

*MATH 126 recommended if you plan on pursuing a bachelors degree in Human Services.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please check with the nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug, and Gambling Counselors or counselor licensing/certificate boards in Nevada, or in other states, if applicable, about the acceptability of academic courses prior to beginning any course, as individual or state licensing and/or certification requirements may vary.
