Into the Woods

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by James Lapine

Great Basin College Theatre, in collaboration with the Elko Overland Stage Theatre Company, proudly presents Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods—a rich, funny, and deeply human musical that weaves together familiar fairy tales and asks what happens after “happily ever after.”

The story follows a Baker and his Wife, who long for a child but are cursed by a mysterious Witch. To lift the spell, they must journey into the woods and collect four seemingly impossible items: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. Along the way, their quest intersects with beloved characters from classic fairy tales, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack of beanstalk fame, and Rapunzel. Each character enters the woods in pursuit of a wish—and each must face the unexpected consequences of getting what they desire.

Act One delivers the enchantment, humor, and magic audiences expect from fairy tales, culminating in wishes fulfilled and celebrations won. But Act Two dares to ask harder questions: What happens when wishes collide? Who bears responsibility when actions have unintended consequences? As the characters confront loss, responsibility, and the complexity of community, Into the Woods transforms from whimsical fantasy into a powerful meditation on morality, resilience, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world.

With Stephen Sondheim’s soaring, intricate score and Lapine’s witty, emotionally resonant book, Into the Woods balances humor and heartache, appealing to both seasoned musical theatre lovers and newcomers alike. This collaborative production brings together students, faculty, and community artists, reflecting Great Basin College Theatre and Elko Overland Stage Theatre Company’s shared commitment to storytelling, education, and live performance in Northeast Nevada.

Into the Woods reminds us that no one journeys alone—and that growing up means learning to live with both hope and responsibility.
