Campus Security

The Department encourages all faculty, staff and students to be active in helping to keep the Great Basin College centers safe places for all. Be aware of your surroundings, use common sense precautions for your personal safety, lock your vehicle when parking and when possible, at night walk with friends. If you observe any suspicious or unusual activity please contact Security or the Campus Director so the situation can be investigated. If you see suspected criminal activities report it immediately. The department is responsible for providing security on the Great Basin College Elko campus during normal class hours and may be contacted at 775-934-4923.

Departmental Training

The Security Department as a member of the University of Nevada, Reno Northern Command follows a continuous training program of in-person and online training. All staff are assigned yearly training courses they must successfully complete, through the PoliceOne Academy training program. PoliceOne Academy is a Nevada P.O.S.T. certified training program.

The Director of Environmental Health, Safety & Security has received additional training, certification and membership from the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA), most recently receiving Certification from NaBITA in Advanced Violence Risk Assessment and their SIVRA-35 assessment question program. Training, certification and membership has also been achieved with the Association of Title IX Administrators (atIXa). The Director has received certification at the level of Civil Rights Investigator Level Four, Title IX Compliance and Athletics and Title IX Hearing Officer & Decision-Maker.

Non-discrimination Policy

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in federally-assisted programs. Specifically, the law reads: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Great Basin College, a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education, is an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity educational institution. It is guided by the principle that equal opportunity means more than equal employment opportunity, and that access to facilities and services shall be available to all people regardless of their race, age, religion, color, gender, including pregnancy related conditions, sexual orientation, disability, whether actual or perceived by others and including service related disabilities, national origin, military status or military obligation, gender identity or expression or genetic information. This also includes a person's clothing or traits historically associated with national origin, race, color or religion, including, but not limited to, hair texture, hairstyle or headwear. This principle is applicable to every member of the GBC/NSHE community, both students and employed personnel at every level, and to all facilities and services. The same questions are asked of each interviewee for a specific position, and if at any time you do not wish to answer a question, you do not have to do so.

Where discrimination is found to have occurred, the NSHE will take action to stop the discrimination, to prevent its recurrence, to remedy its effects, and to discipline those responsible.

Although it is the application of Title IX to athletics that has gained the greatest public visibility, the law applies to every single aspect of education, including course offerings, counseling (advising) and counseling (advising) materials, financial assistance, student health and insurance benefits and/or other services, housing, marital and parental status of students, physical education and athletics, education programs and activities sponsored by the institution, and employment.

Grievance procedures are clearly defined and available to all students and employees. In keeping with the policy of Great Basin College against unlawful discrimination all inquiries and complaints of alleged discrimination should be directed to the following Title IX Coordinator (Primary Officer).

Great Basin College (President’s Council) has adopted the Nevada System of Higher Education Title IX Task Force revisions to the NSHE policy. This policy was approved by the Board of Regents at the June 2017 meeting.
