Program Overview
Associate of Arts - English
This suggested pattern of study for the associate of arts degree is recommended for
students wishing to pursue a baccalaureate degree in English or an English-related
discipline. This pattern is specifically designed to transfer directly into GBC’s
Bachelor of Arts in English program upon completion of this A.A. degree.
Students should be aware that many colleges and universities have different lower-division
requirements. Students intending to transfer into a baccalaureate degree program at
another institution should check that institution’s lower-division requirements to
ensure that appropriate courses are taken at Great Basin College.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students graduating with an Associate of Arts (English Emphasis) will have the knowledge
and skills necessary to:
- Analyze literary texts using a variety of techniques and critical frameworks, as well
as synthesizing complex literary arguments and interpretations.
- Write and communicate effectively in diverse contexts and in a variety of academic,
creative, and professional genres.
- Explicate and utilize numerous theories and methodologies of reading and interpreting
literary texts.
- Think critically and analytically to address complex problems, understand diverse
viewpoints, and explicate various cultural and social perspectives.
